Visiting Portugal
For visitors, Portugal offers more than exotic cuisine, port wine, beautiful beaches and coastline, and a warm Mediterranean climate. Portugal still has an old fashioned charm, with medieval castles and picturesque villages sprawled over coastlines and hillsides, and is an affordable holiday destination in Europe.
Most visitors go to Algarve for the beaches and views of extraordinary beauty, the year-round sunshine, and sports and leisure activities. However, there are also historic towns like Sagres and Lagos, once thought to be at the "the end of the world" ,where you can still experience traditional Portugal, and still enjoy some of the region's finest beaches.
The capital, Lisbon, overlooks the Rio Tejo, and the city climbs into the surrounding hills. Gothic Cathedrals, majestic monasteries, quaint museums, narrow winding lanes and backstreets in the old Moorish sector, are all part of this colourful city. As well, the Monsanto Forest Park is within the city, and is one of the largest parks in Europe.
Sintra is an easy day trip from Lisbon and has many charming sights. Visit the two royal palaces -fairytale and extravagant hilltop Pena Palace and gardens, and the Palacio Nacional, notable for its two gigantic conical chimneys in the center of town. From there it's a short stroll to the mysterious and fanciful hillside gardens at Palacio Regaleira, with hidden grottos, winding paths, and a symbolic tunnel staircase. Good cafes and restaurants are plentiful, as is shopping.
Obidos is a romantic fairy tale town, with delightful cobblestone streets and cascading flowers adorning the houses, all of which is surrounded by 12th century castle walls. The castle is at the far end of the town and has been transformed into a hotel. Every July the town hosts a Medieval Fair celebrating with music, knights, witches, and theatre performances. In November Obidos holds the International Chocolate Festival.
Batalha monastery adorned with delicate lacy stone carving is a Portuguese medieval masterpiece . The abbey was built to celebrate freedom from Spain.
The Douro Valley, in northern Portugal, is one of many world heritage sites and is where port wine is produced. The valley cuts into a wild and mountainous landscape, and until recently has been fairly inaccessible. Steep hillsides are terraced and planted in vines, and windy roads take you through towns that cling to the riverbanks and mountains.
